Horses bred by Brittany Farms won two of last weekend’s elims of the Breeders Crown at Woodbine Mohawk Park, with Pebble Beach capturing his 3-Year-Old Colt Pace elim and Special Way scoring in the 2-Year-Old Filly Trot.
Pebble Beach p,2,1:48.4; 3,1:48.3 ($1,274,094), bred, raised and sold as a Lexington Selected yearling by Brittany, tries to improve off his finish in last year’s 2-year-old Breeders Crown at the Meadowlands, where he won his elim but finished third in the $600,000 final.
Signs are pointing upward, as perhaps the son of Downbytheseaside-Santa Rosa has an affinity for Mohawk’s oval. He won his elim and the $1,000,000 final of the Pepsi North America Cup there earlier this season, right after taking the Somebeachsomewhere Stakes the week prior.
Brittany wishes his extensive ownership group — Patricia Stable, Joe Sbrocco, Country Club Acres, LA Express, John Fodera and Deo Volente Farms — along with trainer Noel Daley, the best of luck in the $600,000 final on Oct. 29, where he’ll square off against highly-regarded Bythemissal, who won the other elimination.
As a side note, Pebble Beach’s Captaintreacherous 3-4-brother,
San Jose, was the highest-selling Brittany yearling at the recent Lexington Selected Sale, fetching $300,000. (Watch for him in the 2023 Breeders Crown at Hoosier Park!)
On the distaff side of the Breeders Crown ledger, Special Way 2,1:52 ($397,125), bred and owned by Brittany and partners Al Libfeld and Marvin Katz, continued her total dominance among 2-year-old filly trotters.
The year’s fastest freshman trotter overall — and richest among her sex — made it six straight stakes wins with her open-lengths score in the Breeders Crown 2-Year-Old Filly Trot Elim and heads to the $600,000 final as the likely race favorite. The impeccably-bred daughter of Walner-Special Hill is trained and driven by Ake Svanstedt.
Next weekend, Brittany hopes to add to its industry-leading total of 28 Breeders Crown champions bred by the farm or the farm and its partners. We wish the best of luck to all participants and to the staff at Woodbine Mohawk.
