Pebble Beach, bred, raised and sold as a yearling by Brittany Farms, has been ranked among the top five 3-year-old pacers in North America as the sport heads closer to the rich summer and fall stakes season.
In a story in the May issue of the
U.S. Trotting Association’s official publication,
Hoof Beats magazine, four of harness racing’s most prominent trainers — Ron Burke, Nancy Takter, Joe Holloway and Chris Ryder — were asked to rank the “best of the best” for the upcoming season… and each placed Pebble Beach among their top selections.
Pebble Beach’s ownership is shared by a group comprised of Joe Sbrocco, Patricia Stable, Country Club Acres, John Fodera, L.A. Express and Deo Volente Farms. He is trained by Noel Daley.
The speedy colt took a freshman mark of 1:48.4 (
Watch Race) and earned $361,250 during his 2-year-old campaign in 2021. His race record was the second-fastest by a 2-year-old last year, and just 1/5 off the World Record. He had the fourth-highest earnings among 2-year-old colt or gelding pacers.
He was 7-2-2 in 11 starts last year and counts among his wins the $278,800 (div.) International Stallion Stakes at the Red Mile, his Breeders Crown elim at the Meadowlands (3rd in the $600,000 final), and three legs and the $250,000 final of the Kentucky Sire Stakes Championship flight, also at the Red Mile.
One of his toughest losses came in late August in a leg of the KYSS. After setting the pace and being on the engine from the start through mid-stretch, he was caught at the wire and finished second by a neck to Caviart Camden in his 1:48.3 World Record mile.
Pebble Beach, by Downbytheseaside-Santa Rosa, is a dual-eligible colt (Ohio and Kentucky) who sold as a yearling at the Lexington Selected Sale for $85,000 — which now looks like a bargain. His Captaintreacherous 3/4-brother sold for $250,000 at last fall’s sale.
Everyone at Brittany wishes the best of racing luck to all of Pebble Beach’s connections, and the farm reminds horsemen and women that more like him will be on the way this fall in Brittany's consignment to the Lexington Selected Sale, Oct. 3-7.
